When he turns 15, Caleb Hienam, the son of a whaling entrepreneur, embarks on his first voyage to learn the family trade. On the ship, he meets Aliro Leftraru, one of the sailors, a descendant of the Mapuche people. When the ship they are working on encounters a whaling boat loaded with survivors of an attack by a monstrous white whale, Caleb and Aliro learn about the Mapuche legend of La Mocha and devise a plan to prevent the indiscriminate hunting of whales in the Pacific. With the help of Duncan Sheffield, a Scottish naturalist, the friends board a new whaling ship, the Peleg, where they meet Joe, a strange sailor, and embark on a dangerous adventure.
The myths and legends of Mocha Island, life on the whaling ships that sailed the southern seas during the 19th century, whaling methods and their evolution—which led to mass slaughter—and the story of Moby Dick, the most famous white whale in literature, come together in this incredible graphic novel. An adventure to read, look at, and read again.
